Redefining American Music An evening with Rhiannon Giddens

After her electric, buzz-producing performance on the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular last summer, Grammy and MacArthur ‘genius’ grant-winner Rhiannon Giddens and her band join the Pops for a genre-busting evening of music from her critically-acclaimed albums with influences in roots, jazz, blues, country, Gospel, and Celtic. The co-founder of Grammy-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, Giddens is also a Grammy nominated solo artist with a recurring role on the hit-TV show Nashville, and hosts the Metropolitan Opera’s Aria Code podcast.

Explore Samuel Coleridge- Taylor whose choral music once rivaled Handel’s Messiah to Billy Strayhorn, the genius behind Duke Ellington who wrote “Take the A-Train” and “Day Dream,” and Eubie Blake, composer of the groundbreaking Broadway musical Shuffle Along.

Once Upon a Time…Stories at the Symphony

Music can tell all kinds of stories: true or fantastic, adventure, romance or comedy...the only limits are the boundaries of your imagination! Come along with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops as they take you on musicals journeys including Jim Beckel’s new multimedia work From the Earth to the Moon and Beyond, and some selections by musical storytellers John Williams and Aaron Copland. The concert concludes with The Composer is Dead by Nathaniel Stookey with text by Lemony Snicket, a madcap whodunnit where someone has killed the Composer. An Inspector must sift through an entire orchestra of extremely guilty-looking suspects. This concert promises to be fun for the whole family!

After sold-out performances in 2017, Leslie Odom, Jr., rejoins the Boston Pops to pay tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole on his centenary, and to sing many of his own Broadway favorites. A triple-threat artist, Mr. Odom is best known for originating the Tony-winning role of Aaron Burr in the original cast of Broadway’s Hamilton. He is also known for the TV series Smash, his #1 Billboard Jazz self-titled album, and the film Murder on the Orient Express.
